    "selftext": "Hello all, \n\nSo I'm quite new to POE. I have been playing an archer and following a video but the guy talks so fast I keep missing stuff (as I'm playing at the same time). And I tried learning things for begginers but the amount of mechanics is overwhelming. Is there any list of things to learn? like early skills you should use, how gear works, stuff like that?\n\n\n\nThanks!",

People play thousands of hours and still learn new things routinely, it’s just that type of game. It can be intimidating, but if you embrace it and just learn what you can as you go then the knowledge will really start to build on itself over time."

      "body": "> Is there any list of things to learn? \n\nIs a huge list and you gonna get overwhelm, I'd suggest just learn 1 thing at a time with your own pace, no rush. Just look up poewiki.net when you encountering something you don't understand, just try learn many thing at once that's how you get overwhelm by guides. PoE is not a complex game but with MASSIVE content.\n\n> like early skills you should use\n\nReally depends what skill you like, just try any skill you like that obtained from quests, and can be bought from any FEMALE NPC in town. PSA, everytime you receive a quest reward with many skill choices, that's mean the NPC will set new set of skills gems to you too. Untill you reach Act6 Lily will sell all sort of skill gems to you without any class restrictions.\n\n> how gear works?\n\nFor defensive, resistance is important, try cap all elemental resistance ice, fire , lightining at 75%, chaos resist can be ignore at early game. Follow with LIFE and then armour or evasion, pick 1 .... don't get greedy try to build both together unless you know what you're doing, both option are great just pick 1 whenver you try to make your build defensively.\n\nFor damage side, really depend on your skill(by looking at the tags in the skill gem description below their name), TL;DR: just stick to 1 type of damage(physical,cold,lightning,fire,chaos) would be more simple, when you knowledgeable enough only try make hybird/mixture of damage."

      "body": "As has been suggested definitely check out Ziz. I’d also suggest picking a mechanic and learning them one at a time. If you like the look of delve, invest in the atlas passives that have delve and delve until you are comfortable with it or bored."

      "body": "Also don't be afraid to ignore some league mechanics at first if you don't want to deal with them yet and are more invested in trying other mechanics out and understanding those!\n\nI also did that when I started playing and for example at first I completely ignored betrayal. I only started to understand and like that mechanic like 2-3 leagues later and that's completely fine!"

      "body": "My strong advice is find a content provider you like, set some time to watch some videos. Take notes if you want. Watching a video as a rookie while you are trying to play is crazy. Wow"

    {
      "body": "what you need to learn is how to use currencies, modifiers which affecting your character or rather your main active skill, and how to check your stats.\n\nOther than these are depends on you. It's just like you want to study science but don't know where to start. So I'll say start by learning the fundamental concepts first.\n\nAlso if you're the type that like to study and research, then it's better for you to just ignore any kind of guides and only take their ideas for you to research on the topics."

      "body": "What build are you playing. Here are people who can explain you, what you don't understand specifically.\nBut yea it is overwelming and needs time. But to have fun without min-maxing from hell to heaven, many things can be ignored for a verry long time."
    },
    {
      "body": "To start, in PoE people don't usually \"Play a class\", people usually say they \"play a build\". Since any skill can be used with any class, saying you play a Ranger doesn't mean much. \n\nIf you're playing Ranger, a good skill for a beginner would be Poisonous Concoction. It requires you to have no weapon equipped, so it's one less item you have to worry about. And it's also a pretty decent skill early.\n\nAs for learning the game mechanics, don't try to understand everything now, it's not very important and will very likely overwhelm you. Try to finish campaign first. I took many leagues to learn \"everything\" about the game. And I'm quoting because I don't really know everything, about all mechanics. The game is huge and it's ok to learn things slowly."

      "body": "This game is very complex and is always getting updated/changing. My suggestion for new players is only focus on the mechanics that are relevant for the build you're interested in playing. So break it down to what your character is: Attacks, Spells, or Minions? Melee, projectiles, or Damage Over Time? And do the same with Defences: Armour, Evasion, Energy Shield, mana reservation skills...\n\nIf you only focus on what your build needs, you'll be less overwhelmed and more likely to retain information as new leagues modify the game. It'll allow you to ask specific questions which will help you focus. \n\nThis game, on it's own, doesn't help new players very well, so feel free to ask for suggestions on builds that interest you, too!"
