"selftext": "So, as the question is stating, am I missing something? \n\nAre we supposed to go around catching and killing everything we see or not? \n\nAre we supposed to be selective with catching pals since the base can only hold so many people working? Then everyone goes into the box and I just do not see why I would use the box to do anything but keep a single copy of each new pal I find? \n\nIdk, I feel like I was really enjoying the game a lot, exploring and finding new pals, but at like level 10ish I just can not seem to progress well and I really have chalked it up to me missing something critical. It feels like I have hit a wall and watching/talking to other they seem to hit a wall MUCH later in levels than I seemingly did. I also have yet to find the \"ancient\" tech things so maybe I need that egg hatcher to get moving forward more? \n\nPs. Yes, this may be me treating it too much like the poke games I used to play, please let me know if this is hindering me.\n\nEDIT: Thank you to everyone for your tips! I am clearly not following the tutorial as well as I need to, and I am seeing QUITE clearly that repeat catching is needed! I will be going at this again with a whole new game and really paying attention this time, since I only have like 20 pals in the dex anyway. Thank you once again to everyone who commented on this overnight! I really felt dumb going to bed and I am glad that I really did miss something. Much better than just not getting it XD",

"body": "So right now I think you're missing that the game expects and incentivizes you to catch duplicates.\n\n1: You get a good chunk of bonus exp for the first 10 pals of a species you catch. If you're not sure if you want to all in on that pal type, that's a decent benchmark to stop at, or at least 5.\n\n2: Pals have random traits, and getting a pal with good traits is a massive boon over getting pals with bad ones.\n\nYou haven't seen this one quite yet but down the line: 3: You get a way to merge duplicate pals to buff one of them.\n\nThe breeding mechanics lean into this a bit, especially with trait inheritance stuff.\n\nIf they start to take up to much space, there are venders who will buy pals you don't want, or you can butcher them for extra loot as well.\n\nSo yeah, the game does kinda expect you to be a little catch and murder happy, filling up a good chunk of that box with doods for the sake of it while you figure out which of the doods you like and don't like and want on your team or base vs. just, catching and culling. Having duplicates on a base is pretty common if they fill a high demand role."

"body": "Think of it like a survival game with pets. You can use the pets to work in the base. You have a box that holds as many as you want so you don’t have to just catch one or 2 as catching will give you the items for kill in them aswell. But after you catch 10 of one pal you hit the xp bonus cap so you don’t need to catch more than that unless you want a better one. \n\nJust focus on catching them until the 10 point for maximum xp and you should do fine. You will also get xp from being in your base while pals are working on your things. And once you defeat the first tower you can redo it over and over so it help with levels also for you and you pals. \n\nHope this helps. :)"

"body": "My understanding is that you wished to play without a base? Well a palbox will heal you defeated pals aside from storing your extras. Advancing up the base tech tree allows you get craft better palspheres which the higher level wild pals will usually need to be caught in as wild pals gain a pretty good resistance to the lower level ones unless they are extremely low hp. Player use weapons scale pretty well when you gain access to them, that isn’t including when you get schematics for the better quality ones. Acient tech comes from killing the bosses that are marked on your map, 1 from each, 5 from a tower boss. You also need certain building to breed better pals, infuse souls into your pals to gain %stat buffs, and condense multiple copies of a pal into your favorite one for more stats and leveling up their racial ability. You also need the base to unlock the ability to mount your pals, which most of the best pals have that function\n\nAlso while it is usually only small amounts you do get some passive exp while building bases. While in your area placing a ton of wooden foundations and breaking them is decent exp at the beginning as it is only 2 exp each. Later gain people build extra berry farms and have a pal craft baked berries, those too each give 2 exp per craft but it is hands free."

"body": "Catch/breed 10 of each pal for exp, it tells you how many of each you have caught when you capture or check paldeck. \nYou get ancient parts from killing alphas (the little mini boss all over the map).\nAnd these two ways is how you lvl up mainly.\n\nThen you sell/butcher/condense all useless pals. You need more than 2 of each because they all hVe random passive skills so when you get to breeding you need a selection. Also a male/female if each helps a lot when you get to breeding. \n\nLvl 10 just keep following the pal box upgrades untill you get 3 bases and 15 pals per base."

"body": "The pals in your box that you don't see a use for now, might be good breeding material later.\n\nLook at the passive traits and learn them, then save (don't sell or butcher) Pals with the good ones, prioritizing the ones with ONLY good traits...so a Pal with ONLY Artisan (+50% Work Speed) would be a priority to keep vs. one with Artisan AND any negative trait OR any positive trait that doesn't \"go\" with Artisan. (Because it will be harder to pass along *only* the trait you want later) You also want to save \"traitless\" or \"blank\" Pals, because they make it easier to pass along only the traits you want. Don't think \"I won't need (this trait) on (this Pal) because he's not (this role).\" You might use a non-mountable Pal to breed a mount Pal...so that low-level (garbage Pal) with Swift, Runner, and Nimble could turn into a Max Speed Mount. \\[NOTE: Some Pal species come by default with certain negative traits, like Coward Cattiva and Glutton Relaxsaurus.\\]\n\nThere's also the question of male vs. female. So it's not unreasonable to keep two Pals with the same passives (or blanks) because one is Male and one Female.\n\nSo later on, when you do decide to start breeding, you'll have a collection of good raw materials you can use to build other Pals with those desirable traits. Trust me, it is a LOT simpler to go out hunting for a \"traitless\" Pal of a given species and gender than it is a Pal with the specific combination of traits you want to \"complete\" your \"build\".\n\nThe game has 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, get the right package of traits on a Pal and you can pass those on to just about any Pal you want. (Using \"traitless\" crosses is a MUCH better RNG than any other method, 2 Pals with an identical \"package\" breeding together is MUCH worse, in fact.)\n\nFor example, I just finished a series of breeding programs that yielded some really nice Pals for my Base moving forward, all steps were fairly simple EXCEPT the one where I had to breed Verdash (with all 4 traits I wanted) with Anubis (with all 4 traits I wanted), that one took many more eggs, about as many as when I made my initial package cross of Lucky (you get this trait from \"shiny\" Pals) Anubis x Artisan/Serious/Work Slave Anubis.\n\nI now have \"Max Work Speed\"\n\n* Anubis (4 Handiwork, 3 Mining, 2 Transporting) \\[Builds or makes things insanely fast, Mines when you don't have anything for them to make or build, Transports when done Mining.\\]\n* Verdash (3 Gathering, 3 Handiwork, 2 Planting, 2 Lumbering, 2 Transporting) \\[Gathers Crops, Builds/Makes, Plants, Lumbers, and Transports...all 'rounder.\\]\n* Petalia (3 Planting, 2 Handiwork, 2 Gathering, 2 Medicine, 1 Transporting) \\[Plants Crops, also Builds/Makes, Gathers, and Craft Drugs, also minor Transportation...inferior to...\\]\n* Lyleen (4 Planting, 3 Handiwork, 3 Medicine, 2 Gathering) \\[Best Planter in game, also can Build/Make, Craft Drugs, and Gather...just better and more focused than Petalia for food production\\]\n\nNext I'm going to make a Max Work Speed Astegon\n\n* Astegon (4 Mining, 1 Handiwork) \\[Best Pure Miner in the Game. Can technically build/make, but no one cares about that.\\]\n\nThe keys to me being able to do all of those breeds were some \"traitless\" Pals that allowed me to breed a whole \"package\" of passive traits true to each of them. So don't sleep on \"blanks\".\n\nAnyway, the point of the base is to be able to come back to it and have shit be ready for you...like Pal Spheres, Ammo and other resources. I look at it like this...if I do my job in setting my base up right, it becomes less about the base, and more about me doing whatever I want whenever I want because I already put work into making it easier on Future Me.\n\nAnother popular non-Combat breeding project is to get faster Mounts. Before the endgame, the fastest possible mounts would have a +60% to Movement Speed from Swift, Runner, and Nimble, with your choice of other passive...Motivational Leader might be good...or Ferocious, or an Elemental Attack boost for a Combat Farming Mount...like a Beacon with Lord of Lightning who AOEs everything around it.\n\nCombat Pals I haven't done yet, but in the endgame, when you get access to the Legendary trait, that one is big.\n\nTL;DR There are reasons to keep multiple Pals from each species (that have good traits) in the box. Future You will thank you. You CAN and SHOULD get rid of Pals with crap traits however. Don't sleep on the \"plain white\" trait ***Work Slave***, its the 2nd best trait for Base Pals not expected to bear the brunt of Base Defense. Learn what the Passives do, so you'll know which ones Future You will appreciate having. (Mine Foreman and Logging Foreman are much less useful beyond the mid-game, and many people won't care about enhancing Player capabilities so much because they use Pals as their damage dealers. So those traits even the Gold ones, might be less important than say, Nimble for mounts.)\n\nEDIT: That's completely leaving aside \"Condensing\"...which is a whole 'nothing thing, but, IMO, better left AFTER you've bred Pals to a state you want them...THEN you can use all the breeding mistakes and imperfect Pals to \"juice\" your \"perfected\" ones."
